Brief Church History

After World War II, San Diego grew rapidly to accommodate the new population that came here for war-factory work and military service. Gladys Gauss, a resident with foresight, believed it was time to establish an Episcopal parish. In 1946, the Los Angeles Diocese established All Souls' as a mission parish. They began in a dance studio, using altar items and prayer books donated by other parishes, with help from active and retired clergy.

The Reverend Frederick Hammond became the first vicar in November 1948 and guided the congregation to become a parish. They acquired land at a key intersection in mid-Point Loma and moved a surplus chapel from a nearby decommissioned army camp in 1949. This chapel served as their sanctuary until the current church was built in 1969.

Our Campus

Nestled in San Diego's Point Loma neighborhood, All Souls' is celebrated for its striking mid-century church architecture. Our campus includes three buildings and diverse spaces that help us with our ministries and worship experiences. Our sanctuary stands out with a beautiful stained-glass window by well-known local artist James Hubbell, which decorates the altar area.
